Your initial consultation case history or case update is currently being carried out via either by a phonecall or video conference call (depending on your preference). This is to minimise the amount of time you will spend in the clinic and so will help to reduce any risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Initial Consultation Case History

Your consultation will start with your osteopath asking about your medical history including details about the current problem, any other history of musculo-skeletal problems, any other medical problems, diagnosed conditions, operations, history of accidents and family history, as well as any other information they may feel is useful based on the information they gather.

Once you and your osteopath have completed your case history you will be able to come into clinic for the examination, diagnosis and treatment aspect of your consultation.

Examination and Diagnosis

You will then be asked to perform some movements which relate to your presenting symptoms to enable your osteopath to see how your body functions within it's structure. Your osteopath will then examine you, using relevant diagnostic tests related to your presenting symptoms to help determine the possible causes of your condition.

Once a full case history has been taken and diagnostic tests have been completed, your osteopath will explain what they believe is causing your problems and the reasons why this may have occurred.

Treatment will be carried out where appropriate, however there will be some techniques which will not be used as they can result in air to be forecably expelled and increase the risk of viral spread.

Having completed the examination and explained the diagnosis, then if appropriate your osteopath will discuss with you the treatment approach they propose using, and with your agreement will treat you with a variety of techniques which they believe are suitable for you. This may include techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint articulation, functional release, muscle energy techniques, cranial osteopathy and joint manipulation.

Advice and Exercises

We may also recommend exercises to help you achieve full functionality or offer some advice to adapting your work or lifestyle, and will be provided by email so that you can refer to them in the comfort of your own home and where appropriate watch videos to remind you how to do the exercises.

Further investigations

Occasionally we may feel that it isn't appropriate to treat you. If this is the case we will explain why and if necessary we may recommend further investigations or treatment by other medical professionals, and will refer you to the appropriate people to help achieve these.
