Up to 80% of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives. Over £1 billion per year is spent on back pain related costs by the NHS, and workplace absence accounts for even more money lost due to excessive aches and pains. The bony building blocks which make up your spine are incredibly strong and very difficult to damage, however, the surrounding soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons)cause a lot of discomfort and pain if strained.

How can osteopathy help Back Pain?

Osteopathy recognises that much of the pain and disability we experience stems from the link between the structure of the human body and the way it functions. Osteopaths work to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems including back pain. Back pain will often resolve on its own over a few days, especially if you gently stretch and keep moving. However, if it lasts longer then an osteopath may be able to help to get your body restore itself to its normal function.

Osteopathic treatments have been shown to have beneficial effects (according to research), especially for back pain, helping you to return to normal activity. The UK National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends manual therapy, such as osteopathy (as part of a package of care), for the management of low back pain and sciatica.

As Osteopathy is based on individual needs each treatment will be specific to you, taking into account your age, health, lifestyle & work, and the diagnosis. It will often focus on release tissue tension through massage, and stretching of muscles and the mobilisation of your joints. In addition, your osteopath may recommend some exercises or lifestyle changes for you to try to help ease and manage your pain.
